What Makes Us Tick

Connecting our Global Community

1+1 = 3

Creating a better world for people with Down syndrome will happen faster when we work as a more connected global community.

Pursuing a Big, Bold Vision

“At first, dreams seem impossible, then improbable, and eventually inevitable.”
– Christopher Reeves

“If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it.”
– William Arthur Ward

We won’t succeed unless we take risks. Big ones. Good ideas rule.

Being Strategic

We need to be strategic in the work we do. We need to change the experience people with Down syndrome and their families have in the world. We can do that by partnering with those individuals and organizations that can help develop solutions that solve systemic problems. We will be successful when people with Down syndrome and their families no longer find it necessary to engage in advocacy activities at an individual level.

Embracing Change

We are curious about the world and take the time to initiate conversations with people we don’t know. Our dialogue generates new ideas and we embrace the change inherent in these ideas. We find opportunity where it didn’t exist before and we encourage others to be open to the ideas that will change our world.

Having a Bias for Action

The only way to move big ideas forward is to take action…NOW!

It’s about finding quick wins…..alongside building strong foundations for strategic change in the future.

Providing Information and Choice “One Sized Doesn’t Fit All’

We need to respect the differences of opinion in our community and recognize that one size does not fit all. There is no one right answer, only an answer that is right for each family. We will serve our community by sourcing best practices related to all available options and provide families with the information necessary to make informed choices; choices that are best for their family.

Pursuing Leverage

There is lots to do! We need to increase our efficiency and our effectiveness as a community! We can do this by:

  • Having groups and people do what they do best! We recognize there are distinct, but interdependent roles to be played at the local, provincial/state, national, and international levels, and by establishing clear roles and responsibilities we can all get more done!
  • Sharing infrastructure related to things like the development and maintenance of:
    • Websites
    • Donor databases
    • Membership databases
  • Globally sourcing and sharing best practices
  • Leveraging technology to deliver products and services and ensuring accessibility to individuals in all communities globally
  • Collaborating. Co-opetition.

We seek out partners who know what we don’t know, who are ‘better’ than we are, and who are willing to share their knowledge and resources with us. We surround ourselves with people who are smarter than us and who share our value and our goals. Then we move out of their way. Our preference is to work collaboratively with existing organizations welcoming them into our global community and leveraging the skills, experience, relationships, and networks that are already in place.

We support any group or individual who seeks us out for support in creating positive change in their community and who has an interest in joining the Circle 21 community and starting a local chapter.
